The Hypermiling Revolution Fueled By Gas Prices

The best way to save money on gas is to squeeze the most miles out of the car and gas you are already purchasing. The name for this rather popular technique for saving money on gas i called hypermiling. Hypermiling has a growing legion of followers and believers that are fighting back against high gas prices by changing their driving habits to a smarter more efficient way of driving. The best thing about becoming a hypermiler is that it will only save you money. You don’t need to have a hybrid car the car you have will work fine. There are no special parts that you will need to add to your car either.

So how do you go about becoming an avid hypermiler? Well here are some easy to follow steps to get you well on your way to driving for hypermiles in no time. The air in your tires need to be the manufacturers required levels because the flatter the tire the more drag that creates on your car thus eating up your gas. Keep your filters clean and up to date with their service because a dirty filter will burn the gas quicker. Do not waste your money on premium gas. When possible drive with your windows closed and open window again creates drag and eats up your gas.

Two major steps you can take to really increase your gas mileage is to stop racing to get to the next light. Quick stop and start driving is a big no no if you want to get more gas mileage out of your car. The other big contributor to eating up your gas mileage is to SLOW down 55 mph and below are the best and most efficient speeds to drive. Once you reach 60mph and above you may be getting there faster but it will be costing you significantly more gas to get there.

Some other tricks you may want to try is when approaching a hill stay on the gas until you get over the top then slip your car into neutral and let gravity take you to the bottom. Also when driving on a street of lights for stop and go traffic try slowing down in between lights so you will not have to stop. One more thing keep track of how many miles you are getting from one tank to the next so you can see the results of your new driving habits and continue to try and beat yourself for how many miles per gallon you are getting.
