Cash For Clunkers Getting More Of Our Tax Dollars

Is it just me or was anyone else really not surprised that the 1 billion dollars that was set aside for the governments cash for clunkers program (CARS) was burned off in the first five days of the program? I mean seriously that was a giant hand out that was just given out thanks to the taxpayers dollars. Now the government is scrambling to find a way to funnel a few more billions of dollars over to the this cash for clunkers program that was supposed to run through August and I have seen some reports stating that they were hoping to run the program all the way to November.

I do think that cash for clunkers was a great idea to get people back into the car showrooms and obviously it worked. The problem of course is the fact of where the money to fund the program is coming from and the fact that we the people burned thru a billion dollars in the matter of five days speaks volumes as to how much people are ready to spend money again. If only for the right price and value is presented to us the customers.

I have seen some dealerships that are matching dollar for dollar the amount of cash for clunkers that people are qualifying for. If the auto dealers are able to swing their own incentive to help get these cars off the lot and selling again then why haven’t they done this before? Does it really make sense for automakers to stick to their car prices when their entire business is going down the drain? If they needed to have a fire sale to get all those cars moving again then so be it, they should have slashed their prices and sold those cars. If the price is right people will come which was proven as soon as the cash for clunkers program went into effect. I just don’t agree with the fact that our tax dollars are not only bailing out these companies but it’s our tax dollars that are selling their products now.
